At least it is pretty!

Last Friday, we had temperatures in the 60s! I was hanging laundry on the washline and had my doors and windows flung wide open sucking in as much fresh air as I could while frantically baking cakes. By Monday morning we had about 5 inches of snow. Pennsylvania weather is such a tease. At least the snow was pretty...
Oddly enough, this week I have been making Easter crafts and I even got fabric all picked out and sketched out the Easter dresses I am envisioning in my head. Oh, and I also made some crispy chocolate peanut butter eggs with a recipe compliments of Paula Deen! Take that, Winter!

Orange Julius

Well, so much for making up school days! President's Day was a snow make-up day, but we got MORE snow so it was cancelled. So, I used up all my daily ambition first thing in the morning and made a nice breakfast for the kiddos. One of their FAVORITES is Orange Julius. I have also made this for brunch showers and the like and I get many requests for the recipe. So, here you go!

Orange Julius
6 oz. frozen orange juice concentrate (I use half of a standard 12 oz. can)
1 cup water
1 cup milk
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla (OK, I just dump this in- I never measure vanilla cause I saw Martha Stewart just dumping it in once)
10-12 ice cubes (I just use a whole tray)

Put all ingredients in your blender and combine (I usually use the ice crush mode) until smooth.
I would love to know if you try this- it is DELICIOUS!!!

3-in-1 Birthday Party

Birthdays for our family are a simple affair. Cake and ice cream (sometimes more food depending on how ambitious I am) with just the family. Oh, but our families are so big that with only grandparents, aunts, uncles, and first cousins we can end up with 50 people here!
With that kind of a crowd, it is understandable that we usually combine my oldest two children's birthdays into one party since they are only 4 days apart. This year, my 5yo got a belated party mixed in with their party as well, so we did a 3-in-1 deal. The stipulation the kids have always given me is: "I get my own cake!" So, in less than 24 hours, on top of cleaning and making 4 batches of homemade ice cream, I had the additional challenge of making different cakes/cupcakes for each of them.

I hit up the candy aisle at the grocery store and found these awesome gummies to make army cupcakes for my 11yo son.
My 7yo daughter INSISTED on a 3 layer cake. UGH!!! So I made a miniature version with a 6" round cake on the bottom, then a tart, then a cupcake, then I added a mini cupcake so it is actually 4 layers. My buttercream icing doesn't work for decorating layer cakes and they were sliding all over. I just kept putting more stuff on there, like fruit roll-ups and purple icing and the ultimate cover-up- SPRINKLES! It is quite alright to laugh at this one- it turned out terrible!I also made mini cupcakes just so we would have enough cake.

My 5yo at the last minute requested a star cake and I remembered that I had these star foil cupcake liner/pan things. YAY! Easy!!!

One of the most challenging things about mushing all these birthdays together was trying to light all the candles and snap picture before they all melted. So, I wasn't too picky and I hope that some day my son in embarrassed by this picture since he wouldn't cooperate. The girls posed nicely.Even if she didn't look.
So, this was not my best work, but the kids were happy and everything tasted great and we had a nice time surrounded by lots of loving family. That is all that matters.
Happy Birthday!!!

Learning New Tricks

I have made Easter baskets before, but this year I wanted to try out some new things.

First, I used a notched wood handle that you push in. It is so sturdy and I really like it better than the other ones I have made or used.I also dipped this one in the walnut dye my husband made for me. It gave it such and aged, weathered, antique-looking appearance. I love it!
BUT, as much as I loved the finish already, I wanted to try adding some color by painting the basket. Of course I had to use purple!

I roughed it up a little more later by sanding to get back some of that vintage feel. Then I made a liner- the first one I have made to go on a basket with handles and the first for a round basket, too!

I usually teach myself all of my craft techniques, and you never know until you try something out. Luckily, this one turned out well!

I LOVE all the chocolate, but don’t forget to celebrate the real reason for Easter!

Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. Luke 24:46-47

Happy Belated Valentines Day!

Sorry. I am a day late. I got called in to substitute teach yesterday so this will have to do.

One of my 2011 goals was to do more decorating projects and crafts with the kids. Here is what we threw together for Valentine's Day...

(I apologize for the lousy pictures. That icky metal awning is in the background and the lighting is really tough to get a decent picture. So just ignore that part.)

I took a stack of leftover paper doilies (available at your local dollar store) and cut a heart out of the middle. They are so thin that I cut them all at once- just don't pull them apart until you are done. I like how the lacy edge matches my valances!

Then I let my girls (mostly my 5yo) decorate them. I gave them some of my scrapbooking stickers since we couldn't find the book of Valentine stickers I bought them a few weeks ago. Anyway, I figure, "Why am I hoarding these scrapbooking supplies? I haven't gotten around to it in years!"

Now it is really warming up around here, which is totally getting me in the mood for SPRINGTIME!!! So, prepare to be bombarded with Easter and springish things for awhile!!

Straw-buh-buh-buh-buh-berry Purse!

My 2yo has really been into “Straw-buh-buh-buh-buh-berry Shortcake” (as she calls her) lately. The kids got Walmart gift cards for Christmas and she picked out a little Strawberry Shortcake car and doll set that was on clearance. I knew something that little would get lost quick around here, and I like to hear her say “Straw-bub-buh-buh-buh-berry Shortcake” so I made her a little purse with some quilting fabric I didn’t really like anymore because it doesn’t quite match any other fabrics I have. It didn’t turn out too bad for just making it up as I went along, and I took pictures along the way so I could show all of you how I did it!

I cut a dark reddish-pink outside and a weird lime green lining 13 by 20 inches each. I also cut two rectangles from the pink for a pocket measuring 4 by 6.

I wanted to make a quilted purse just to try it once. However, in the spirit of using stuff I have laying around, I used 2 sheets of felt instead of fusible fleece. I just pinned them down real good.
I quilted wherever I felt like going with the needle all over it- it is not quite freehand, though, because I have a really old, cheap machine with minimal features that I am too sentimental to replace and I can’t lower or cover the feed dogs on it. So the swirls and loops and turns are all kinda big.
Still, it was fun to just go with it!
Next came the pocket. I interfaced one piece to make it sturdier
and then sewed the two pieces right sides together, leaving an opening in the center of one side to turn it right-side out.
Then I topstitched two lines along the edge with the opening to close it up and make a more finished looking top to the pocket.
I grabbed my green lining and put the pocket in the middle. I sewed it down along the sides and bottom.
Then I started to put my purse together. I folded the pink purse fabric in half, right sides together, and sewed down the side and across the bottom, using about a 1” seam allowance because the felt didn’t go to the edges. And I did the same for the lining, but I forgot to take a picture of this step.
Then, to get the strawberry shape, I marked the bottom middle and 4 inches up on each side, then drew a diagonal line and curved it out some. I sewed along the line and trimmed the excess and I took a picture!
BUT, when I tried fitting my lining inside the outside to try it out, I realized that the bulk of the felt made it smaller inside and I had to take it in a bit. So, I sewed about 1/8” from bottom seam and ¼” up the side. Trial and error are a big part of making stuff up as you go along!
Next came the petals for the top. I measured the top of my purse to be 18” and thought, “Hmmm… 18”/3 = 6” so I can do three 6” petals. I drew up a pattern and traced it on some green poly-cotton blend I had that I wanted to use up. I cut 6 of them out and left a ¼” seam allowance all around. I also cut 3 pieces of interfacing out on the same lines as I traced from the pattern and interfaced 3 of the petals.
Then I sewed the curved sides together, turned them right side out, and pressed them really well. I also cut two long pieces for the handle 2 ¾” by 20” and interfaced one of those like I did the petals.
I sewed the handle sides together, flipped them right side out, pressed. Then I pinned everything onto the bag and basted it.
Almost done! I put the lining inside the purse (I had to trim some of the top off the lining, too) and pinned them together. By now, I was stealing moments as I could all day and it was getting dark, so you get pictures by the window with Tigger in the background!
After I sewed all the way around, I seam ripped an opening in the side of the lining so I could turn everything right side out.
Last step! I topstitched the top edge all around UNDER the petals to hold the lining in place better.
TA DA!!!

It fits her little car and her hat can go in the pocket. Unfortunately, her skirt is missing already.
Straw-bub-buh-buh-buh-berry looks like she likes it!
Now, since this was completely made up on a whim as I went along, here are some things I would do differently if I were to make this again:
1. More petals! The bag doesn’t have symmetry when you look at it from the front and it drives me CRAZY!!!
2. A drawstring top would be really cute and more strawberry-looking! I originally was gonna do this, but then I wanted to quilt it and I decided a drawstring might be too hard for my 2yo.
3. The handle isn’t think enough. It needs more interfacing or something.
4. The pocket is on the side and I think it would be better on the back.
5. I would make it just a little bit shorter- maybe 1-2” or so.
So, if you decide to make one of these, feel free to try some of these ideas out!
